"The New DOE Accelerator Order" ABSTRACT - WAO'98 The U.S. Department of Energy ORDER on Safety of Accelerator Facilities (DOE 5480.25) was first issued on November 3, 1992. After extensive revision, the ORDER is being reformatted and issued under a new DOE Directives system as DOE O 420.X. The revised Order contains additional exclusions, effectively eliminates the requirement for hazard classification, and retains major requirements for Safety Assessment Document (Safety Analysis), Accelerator Safety Envelope, Accelerator Readiness Review, Unreviewed Safety Issue, and Shielding Policy. The DOE is conducting joint assessments with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for possible external regulation rather than the current internal DOE regulation of its National Laboratories. The status of external regulation and State interest will be presented. Copies of the DRAFT Order and Office of Energy Research Guidance for the Order will be made available. Dr. DeVaughn R.
