How We Do Business At IUCF H. Peter Goodwin and Gary W. East Indiana University Cyclotron Facility 2401 Milo B. Sampson Lane Bloomington, IN 47408-0768 Over the last several years, the mission of the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility has changed considerably, greatly affecting the way business is done at IUCF. Prior to about 1996 the majority of funding required to run and maintain the two cyclotrons and the synchrotron with electron cooled beams came from moneys provided by U. S. government grants. The primary mission of the lab was then to provide the highest quality research program for scientists and students from around the world. A recent lack of support for intermediate energy nuclear physics research has prompted a search for funding from private sources, other government agencies and the medical community. As our main source of funding for nuclear physics is reduced, interest in our Radiation Effects Research Program (RERP) has seen an increase mainly from government contractors in the space industry. The simulated space environment can be invaluable in the determination of failure modes of electronics in orbit. Also in the early stages of development is the transformation of the IUCF into a midwest treatment center for both oncology and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). One experimental area has already been converted for the treatment of AMD while two other areas are currently being remodeled to accommodate gantries. These areas which we are becoming more involved in, and which we are becoming more dependant upon, will be explained in more detail along with a brief description of the general lab operation.
