Richard Pardo ATLAS Operations Manager Argonne National Laboratory Pardo@anlphy.phy.anl.gov WAO'98 Abstract The ATLAS Training Program ATLAS is a national user facility for low-energy heavy-ion research. It provides a complex mix of beams (28 isotopes last year) for research in nuclear physics. The operator crew is responsible for configuring the facility, tuning beam to target, monitoring the facility operation and has significant safety-related responsibilities. This poster will describe the training program for ATLAS operators. The program is a mix of formal class-room sessions, document study, and on-the-job training. A number of tests confirm the adequate level of training, in the areas of both technical knowledge and safety, for the candidate operator and eventually lead to formal certification as an ATLAS operator.
