A Comparison of the Maintenance and Operation of the SLAC Linac and Damping Rings Roslind Pennacchi Accelerator Department Technical Manager, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) WAO'98 Maintenance Poster Abstract The maintenance scheduling and mode of operation of the SLAC linac is compared to the damping rings. The SLAC linac contains a large number of identical subsystems that are well understood and have a limited number of failure modes. The damping rings, though physically smaller, contain a multitude of complex systems that present a challenge in scheduling effective maintenance during the limited access times. The positron production system is also compared, where high radiation and contamination present a different set of maintenance problems.
