"How We Do Business" WAO'98 Poster Abstract David Windmueller, TJNAF Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab), formally known as CEBAF, is a $600M facility located in Newport News, Virginia, USA. It is a recirculating linac machine that utilizes super-conducting technology. The accelerator is presently capable of operating at energies up to 4GeV with upgrades to 5 and 6 GeV in the near future. The accelerator delivers up 200 uA CW beam current to three end stations which can receive beam and perform experiments simultaneously. The Lab has approximately 500 employees with approximately 100 of them assigned to the Accelerator Division. The Accelerator Division consists of MCC Operations, Software, Radiation Control, Safety Systems, Accelerator Electronics Support (AES), and Operability Groups. The accelerator is staffed 24 hours a day seven days a week by the MCC Operations Group. Shifts are run utilizing a 'seven days on, seven days off' rotation with personnel switching from owls to days to swings every other week. Operators are assigned control room duty for 70% of their time and are given the additional time to work on projects designed to increase the efficiency of control room tasks. These projects take the form of software or hardware development depending on the talents of the operator. Control room staffing consists of one Crew Chief and two Operators (soon to be three) per shift. The Crew Chief receives their shift instructions from the Program Deputy who is assigned the task of scheduling and executing program control for a two week period. Maintenance is scheduled approximately every two weeks and is generally followed by a number of machine development shifts. There is only one extended shutdown period per year (5-7 weeks) which is scheduled to follow the December Holiday season. Operations is strongly committed to the use of documentation to perform the tasks required to commission, setup and maintain the accelerator. The documentation has an on-line delivery system that is accessible from anywhere on site.
